Each year, in November, just ahead of the rainy season, Open Arms distributes Starter packs to the homes of families where children have returned from our Infant Homes and to our Feeding Stations.
Each pack contains 10KG combined fertilizer, 10KG of urea and 2.5 KG hybrid maize seed and give families the chance to help themselves by growing their own maize.
Each feeding station receives 4 of these packs which should yield 200Kg of maize. This is rare but we do see an average of 100kgs which goes a long way to providing the food needed to give the children who attend the nursery one square meal a day.
The project is supported by the University of Strathclyde’s Malawi Millennium Project and this year Open Arms has been able to make up and distribute a fantastic 165 starter packs!
