In June, twelve ladies will head to Malawi to take on an incredible challenge!
Known as the 'Island in the Sky', Mount Mulanje is the highest mountain in Malawi, reaching over 3000m, making it the highest point in south-central Africa. To raise vital funds for Open Arms, this amazing group are going to attempt a gruelling three day trek to the summit.
Starting early in the morning the group will take on a steep climb for four hours to reach Chambe plateau. From there they will continue for a further four hours across and up to Chisepo Hut where they will spend their first night on the mountain. With a bucket bath to refresh and a fire to keep them warm, they will gain a few hours sleep before the climb to the summit the next day!
After rising at 4am the group will embark on the hardest bit of the climb to reach Sapitwa Peak, standing proud at 3002m. It will take them approximately two hours to scramble the steep rocky terrain, to reach "the unreachable peak" (Sapitwa translated in Chichewa).
After celebrating reaching the top (hopefully), they will then have to turn their focus on getting back down! Following a two hour steep descent from Sapitwa, the group will then continue for a further six hours across the plateau to Chambe hut where they will spend another evening on the mountain, before descending back to base the following morning.
Apart from achieving this amazing challenge, these ladies, who come from Harrogate, Scotland and The Netherlands, all have one goal in mind - To raise as much as they can to help vulnerable children and their families in Malawi. Between them they hope to raise £15,000, which could help provide ten babies and their families with all the nutrition, resources and support they need for a year to keep them healthy and cared for at home!
We wish Sarah-Jane, Liz, Alison, Caro, Lauren, Louisa, Mandy, Bev, Anne, Christina, and Open Arms Malawi staff Claire and Suzie the best of luck on this epic climb.
