Jumping to help!

Even during a pandemic, we are continuously inspired by what our supporters do for fundraising events.

Shona Laycock is one such supporter.  She has found an adventurous way to raise money – a skydive.  The 17-year-old pupil from Ripon Grammar School is hoping to raise over £1000 to support children in Malawi.

Why?

This is a personal passion for Shona.  She spent her younger years growing up in South Africa, where most of her extended family remain.

She is one of four girls and is passionate about travel and culture.  She has also witnessed first-hand the extreme hardships that many families endure.

A personal story

Shona’s father grew up in Malawi and her mother spent her teenage years there.

She heard about Open Arms Malawi from her sister.

“About two year's ago my sister came across Open Arms Malawi through work and spent time volunteering in Malawi.  After the Covid Pandemic hit, it has been difficult to go back to Africa and so I decided I wanted to do a big trip after I completed my A-levels this year”.

The pandemic has had a global impact and Shona felt that this would be an opportunity to do some volunteering to help. She contacted Open Arms after her sister’s recommendation and is keen to “showcase the incredible work the charity does”.

An Adventurer

Shona is an adventurer and always wanted to do some fundraising for Malawi.

“I have always wanted to do a skydive and I felt doing this for a charity would be a good way to fundraise for something that I am passionate about”.

Excited

Shona tells us she is excited about the dive and is looking forward to the incredible photo opportunities and outstanding views she will witness.

She is also looking forward to the achievement of completing a skydive.

Scared

Shona admitted she is not looking forward to every aspect of the adventure.

“I am not looking forward to the initial nerves before the jump and the wait in the plane beforehand”.

Fundraising for Malawi

We are proud, humbled and hugely grateful to Shona for her outstanding fundraising efforts and commitment to Open Arms Malawi.

She is hoping to raise £1000!
