A new director at Open Arms

The children returned to school, with many of them starting at a new educational institute, and we also welcomed Charlie McCaulder as the new Director of Open Arms.

September was a busy month at our Blantyre home. Charlie will be working alongside Neville for the next few months, until Neville steps down when he retires in December this year.

Not only does Charlie bring with him a wealth of experience in international logistics and operations, having worked for the British Red Cross and Save the Children Fund in Sudan, Tanzania and Kenya, but also a solid background in education, having spent ten years teaching at St Andrew’s International Primary School in Malawi and, more recently, operating as Deputy Head Teacher at The Latham School in Tanzania.

When asked what attracted him to the role he replied, “I enjoyed teaching, but getting to make a difference to the lives of the children at Open Arms was too good an opportunity to miss. Open Arms is a high-profile and highly credible charity in Malawi. Who wouldn’t want to make a contribution to its future?”

In spite of his extensive credentials, Charlie views his suitability for the role in a much more personal way; “Ten years in humanitarian logistics and a Master of Education should help, but 20 years as a Dad may be my most valuable qualification”.

We are delighted to have Charlie on board and are confident that the future of Open Arms is in very safe hands.
