Mount Mulanje Malawi

Mount Mulanje

Mount Mulanje, is the highest mountain in Malawi, and at 3002m, Sapitwa Peak is the highest point in south-central Africa. This huge granite rock covers a vast area of 650 square kilometres and is home to dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, deep gorges, lush forests and truly incredible panoramic views.

Mulanje is well set up for trekking with a network of trails and charming mountain huts to stay overnight. The climb to Sapitwa peak is a challenging three day climb, but you'll be accompanied by an experienced guide and porters to carry your belongings, to help you achieve your goal and reach the summit.

The Experience

To help you get the most out of this trip, we have arranged a 6 night package to also give you the opportunity to spend time with the Open Arms team and experience an incredible safari at Majete Nature reserve.

DAY 1

After arriving at Blantyre Airport, you'll be transported to your accommodation for a chance to relax and meet your fellow travellers. Enjoy a welcome dinner with members of the Open Arms team and a talk about the work that we do.

DAY 2

Spend a wonderful morning visiting a local village with the Open Arms team. You’ll experience a warm Malawian welcome, the opportunity to visit an Open Arms nursery school, meet families and hear how Open Arms is helping to make a difference. Then after a traditional Malawian lunch with members from the village you'll take a brief stop in Blantyre to stock up on supplies before being transferred to the base of Mount Mulanje. After dinner you'll meet your guide to prepare you for the climb ahead.

DAY 3

Accompanied by your guide and porters you'll set off on a 6-7 hour trek to reach Chisepo Hut, at the foot of Sapitwa peak. Take in the basic rustic charm of the mountain hut as you enjoy dinner cooked for you on a fire, as you prepare for the big climb tomorrow!

DAY 4

Today you'll embark on a round trip to Sapitwa Peak which takes approximately 5-6 hours return. This is a strenuous hike with some decent rock climbs and steep hills, but it is not impossible for a fit adult and well worth it when you reach the top. You'll then continue on an easier trek to Chambe Hut which is a further 2-3 hours. Again enjoy the simplicity of your overnight stay in the mountain hut.

DAY 5

On the last day you will descend from Chambe Hut to Likhubula, with a chance to stop and refresh at Likhubula falls and pools, which will take approximately 4-5 hours. You'll then be picked up and taken to your accommodation at Majete Nature Reserve. Staying at Thawale Lodge, a beautiful tented camp at the entrance of the reserve, you’ll enjoy a wonderful sundowner game drive with the chance to see some incredible wildlife, including elephants, lions, cheetahs and giraffes.
